Sunday Mornings
at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church

Sunday Worship

At the very heart of our life together is our Eucharistic fellowship. Eucharist comes from the Greek word for thanksgiving, and each Sunday morning, we gather to praise and give thanks to God, for all that we are and all that we have.

Our services of Holy Eucharist, at 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 a.m., contain two parts: the Word of God and Holy Communion. During the Word of God, or liturgy of the Word, we sing (at the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services), pray, hear lessons from Scripture, hear a sermon, affirm the ancient faith of the Church in the Nicene Creed, and confess our sins and receive absolution. At our 9:00 a.m. service, our youngest parishioners are invited to attend Children’s Liturgy for the first part of the service.

We then transition to Holy Communion–also known as the Lord’s Supper, the Mass, Eucharist, or Divine Liturgy–during which we consecrate bread and wine in the central prayer of our worship together, the Great Thanksgiving. All baptized Christians are then invited to the Lord’s table to share in the Sacrament of Christ’s body and blood, as Jesus commanded us. (Those who’ve not been baptized are no less welcome to receive a blessing from the priest.)

The second part of our service also includes singing (at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.) and concludes with our being sent into the world to share the love of God made known to us in Jesus Christ.

Our order of service is ancient, with many elements dating to the earliest centuries of the Church, and comes from the Book of Common Prayer, the first of which was published in 1549.

Formation & Fellowship

After the 9:00 a.m. service, formation for children and youth takes place during the school year, and various offerings for adults take place year-round. The opportunity to connect with others over a cup of coffee in the Atrium is always on offer.

Accessibility

We are currently working to install a wheelchair lift into our nave, which is accessible from our South 9th Street entrance. Accessible parking spaces exist on Jackson Avenue with entry into the Atrium and in our parking lot off of Van Buren Avenue, which also offers entry into our Atrium.

What to Wear

You’ll find parishioners dressed in their “Sunday best,” along with those who are more casually dressed at St. Peter’s. Whatever your attire, you are welcome.

Location and Parking

St. Peter’s is located just west of the Oxford Square. The front doors of the church are at the corner of South 9th Street and Jackson Avenue. Our parking lot is located off of Van Buren Avenue, and on-street parking is available for free on Sunday mornings, as is parking at the Department of Human services lot, caddy-corner to the church, and at the Rebel Bookstore, across from the church. On weekdays, on-street and DHS lot parking is metered.
