Outreach Ministries Doors of Hope Transition Ministries

Doors of Hope Transition Ministries

This ministry includes, but is not limited to, guiding homeless families and at-risk families in the Oxford/Lafayette County area and building self-reliance, improving life skills, and locating supportive housing.

Canterbury

Canterbury

This is the University of Mississippi’s Episcopal ministry and referred to as “ the Episcopal Church at Ole Miss.” It is a campus-based ministry for students who identify with the Christian beliefs of the Episcopal faith. On Sunday evenings, this group gathers at St. Peter’s for worship at 4:30 p.m., and then share a meal together following the service.

Food Pantry

Food Pantry

The combined community of the Oxford/Lafayette County area serves local members of the community in need of assistance with meals and food supplies. Volunteers of St. Peter’s staff the pantry and distribute the items as needed on specified days.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity

A community group of participants, from several local churches, that build homes for low-income families.

Haven House

Haven House

This is a facility that offers assistance to those struggling with alcohol and drug dependencies. St. Peter’s parishioners assist with a worship service and other needs.

Hispanic Ministries

Hispanic Ministries

This ministry involves a Eucharist service every Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed for tutoring in English, as translators and to give legal advice. These volunteers also provide refreshments on Sunday evenings.

Honduras Medical Mission

Honduras Medical Mission

This is a yearly trip to aid the medical, dental and veterinary needs within Honduras.

Interfaith Compassion Ministry

Interfaith Compassion Ministry

This is an ecumenical organization, located at 904 North Lamar Blvd., which distributes money to those in need. Volunteers are needed to serve on the board of directors and to assist with fundraisers.

Lafayette County Detention Center Ministry

Lafayette County Detention Center Ministry

Each Thursday members of the Brotherhood of St. Peter maintain the library at the Lafayette County Detention Center. Brothers and other volunteers collect and distribute books to the pods at the center. Donations of paperback books are always appreciated and can be left on the bookshelf in the hallway of the church.

Leap Frog

Leap Frog

This is an after-school tutoring and enrichment program sponsored by St. Peter’s, Oxford-University United Methodist Church, and the local chapter of the United Way. Leap Frog serves “at-risk” first and second grade children from the Oxford and Lafayette public schools. Volunteers are needed to tutor, lead recreational activities, provide refreshments, and drive the children home from various locations.

Little Dresses Ministry

Little Dresses Ministry

This ministry is involved in making dresses from pillowcases, which are then blessed by one of the parish priests, and sent to young girls in need in various countries.

This group meets periodically every two to three months.

Manna Feeding Ministry (a college ministry)

Manna Feeding Ministry (a college ministry)

On Thursdays meals are provided for the less-fed or those unable to leave their homes. The meals are prepared in St. Peter’s kitchen and delivered to those in need. College students serve as cooks and cooking assistants, meal assemblers, delivery people and clean-up crew. Arrival time for the students is 3:30 p.m.

NMRC Worship Service

NMRC Worship Service

The North Mississippi Regional Center is a residential facility for the mentally challenged. St. Peter’s assists in a worship service on the second Sunday of each month at 3:00 p.m.

Parchman Prison Ministry

Parchman Prison Ministry

Each year a group of parishioners travel to Parchman prison on the Saturday before Christmas to worship with and share gifts with the inmates.

Racial Harmony Committee

Racial Harmony Committee

This group meets regularly with members of Second Missionary Baptist Church, Oxford-University United Methodist Church and Burns United Methodist Church to plan events together and promote race relations in our community.

Hospitality and Fellowship Bridge and Mah Jongg

Bridge and Mah Jongg

Men and women meet every Monday in the Parish Hall at 1:00 p.m. to play Bridge or Mah Jongg.

Brotherhood of St. Peter

Brotherhood of St. Peter

This is a men’s fellowship founded on the principles of study, service and prayer. The ongoing service project for the group is the maintenance of the library at the Lafayette County detention facility. This group meets for breakfast on the third Saturday morning of each month in the fellowship hall from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.

Connections

Connections: This group meets during the school year on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the large parlor. This group is primarily composed of women with young children who share in prayer, devotion, discussion and along with personal support of each other.

Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

The Episcopal Church Women was founded in 1826. The ECW of St. Peter’s have two major fundraisers: the sale of Christmas Greenery during the holidays and the Valentine’s Bridge and Mah Jongg luncheon. ECW’s most important ministry is to bereaved families, preparing for the visitation and/or a meal for the family, and those traveling to the funeral, in the Parish Hall.

55+ Senior Group

This group meets for lunch in the parish hall at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month and enjoys a program together. There is a $10.00 fee for the catered meal.

Worship Ministries Altar Guild

Altar Guild

Parishioners who assist in maintaining the liturgical appointments and linens for the altar and prepare the church for worship. Their responsibilities include the preparation, setting and care of the vessels for communion. They also assist with the flowers and a variety of other tasks that promote the dignity and beauty of the worship services.

LEM/LEV

LEM/LEV

Lay Eucharistic Ministers administer the chalice, read the prayers of the people, and assistant the celebrant of the service as needed. Lay Eucharistic Visitors take communion from a church service to those who are home-bound or are in the hospital. Participants for this ministry are selected by the clergy.

This group of men and women assist by welcoming people during the church services, handing-out the service bulletin, assist the congregation during communion, and receive the offering at the 11:00 a.m. service (10:30 a.m. during the summer).

Pastoral Care Ministries Empty Cradles

This is a support group for parents who have lost a child to miscarriage, still-birth or infant death. This group meets as needed. Barbara Lowe is also available for personal support to the St. Peter’s community and their friends who have experienced this loss.

Newcomer Ministry

This group welcomes new members to the parish. They also assist them in identifying their areas of interest in the church.

Pastoral Care Team

Pastoral Care Team

This ministry invites parishioners to share their gifts of compassion as they minister to the members of the parish during times of difficulty and joy. Gifts may vary from food preparation, home and hospital visits, transportation, letter writing, phone calls, birthday cards and flower delivery. There are five teams for this ministry. The teams meet in rotation every five weeks. Volunteers are welcomed.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer Shawl Ministry

This ministry is involved in knitting or crocheting shawls, lap robes, caps for infants and for those receiving chemotherapy. These items are blessed by a parish priest and given to those in need. Those who do not know how to knit or crochet are encouraged to join and learn (including children.)
